Kyōsai was a rebel whose art was often unconventional. The eleven pictures shown in this gallery are good examples. Click on a picture to enlarge it. The shapes of flowers and birds are distorted, their sizes often exaggerated and their colors not always true to life. In addition, many of the pictures show a violent encounter which was atypical of Japanese flower-bird art. These unconventional pictures were included in a woodblock-printed picture book entitled Kyōsai Rakuga (i.e., Kyōsai’s Drawings for Pleasure), published in 1881.
